Which Code Applies To You
IPC — International Plumbing Code
Published by the International Code Council. A model document with no force of its own until a state or city adopts it, usually with amendments. Its text is behind ICC's paywall, so no figure on this site is attributed to it.
UPC — Uniform Plumbing Code
Published by IAPMO, and likewise a model. Minnesota's adopted version is published free by the state's Revisor of Statutes, which is where the supply fixture unit values quoted on this site come from.
🔧 What These Calculators Do, and What They Do Not
These are five estimating tools for water supply work: sizing a supply line against a velocity ceiling, totalling fixture units, working out where the pressure went, sizing a water heater, and converting flow units. Each one shows the formula it applies, states the assumptions built into it, and links the document behind every constant. None of them is a code compliance check, and none replaces a licensed plumber or an engineered design.
That distinction matters more in plumbing than in most trades, because a wrong pipe size is expensive to correct once it is in a wall, and because the rules genuinely differ by jurisdiction. Two model codes compete in the United States — the International Plumbing Code and the Uniform Plumbing Code — and neither has any authority until a state or a city adopts it. Adoption is usually of a specific edition, and almost always with local amendments layered on top. The two families do not agree even on basics: a domestic clothes washer is worth 1.4 water supply fixture units in the values built into our calculator and 4.0 in the Uniform Plumbing Code as Minnesota adopted it. Where we can show a disagreement like that, we do, on the page where it matters.
📚 Where the Numbers Come From
The velocity limits, copper tube bores and friction-loss arrangement used across the site come from the Copper Development Association's Copper Tube Handbook — a trade association's design guidance, not regulation, and labelled as such. The fixture unit itself comes from Roy B. Hunter's 1940 report for the National Bureau of Standards, which NIST still publishes in full. The peak flow our fixture-unit calculator reports is interpolated from the demand figures Hunter tabulated in that report — and from the right one of his two curves, because he published a separate curve for flush-valve and flush-tank supply and said to choose between them. A house and an office block with the same fixture-unit total do not need the same pipe. Water heater sizing rests on the Department of Energy's first hour rating test procedure and the Federal Trade Commission's labelling rule. Maximum fixture flow rates are federal law.
Where a constant in a calculator has no published basis — the water heater's occupancy table, for instance, or the fitting allowances in the pressure drop tool — we say so plainly on that page rather than dressing it up. And where a document could not be opened, we name it and attribute nothing to it.
Each calculator lists its own sources in full. The principal ones across the site are the Copper Development Association's Copper Tube Handbook, Roy B. Hunter's Methods of Estimating Loads in Plumbing Systems (National Bureau of Standards, 1940), Minnesota Rules 4714.0610 for adopted Uniform Plumbing Code supply fixture unit values, the Department of Energy's water heater test procedure at 10 CFR Part 430, Subpart B, Appendix E, and the federal fixture flow limits at 10 CFR 430.32. Whatever these tools say, the code adopted by your authority having jurisdiction is what governs the work.
